Michigan Teacher of the Year Visits
Woodhaven Upper Elementary School

Woodhaven Upper Elementary School had a special visitor on Friday, September 12, from Michigan’s Teacher of the Year, Corey Rosser, a social studies teacher at Quest High School in Lapeer County’s North Branch Area Schools.

Rosser was named one of the state’s 10 Regional Teachers of the Year in February, along with Woodhaven Upper Elementary 6th grade ELA Teacher Stephanie Jaskolski. Jaskolski is representing Region 9 for the State of Michigan.

The 10 Regional Teachers of the Year will work together during the school year as the 2025-26 Michigan Teacher Leadership Advisory Council. During their year of service, group members work directly with the Michigan Department of Education and other Michigan educational stakeholders to address issues facing the state’s education system to ensure that the voices of teachers are present in these discussions.

While at the WUE, Rosser met with Principal Roger Gurganus, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum Josh Satterfield and Jaskolski for a tour of the school and a discussion of the unique programming at the upper elementary 5th and 6th grade building. Rosser also got to learn how to play the drums with an interactive session with the fifth grade choir students as well in Mr. Seibert’s class.

Warriors Celebrate Homecoming with Pixar-Themed Festivities and Big Win

Woodhaven High School’s 2025 Homecoming celebration was one to remember! The evening kicked off with the annual parade, led by Grand Marshal Sherry Berecz, Brownstown Township Supervisor, and special guests from the Class of 1975. The parade featured a showcase of Warrior spirit, with appearances by the cheer and dance teams, swim, football, Unified Sports, Goon Squad, and many other student organizations.

This year’s parade theme brought Pixar magic to life through imaginative floats. Each class selected a movie to represent—Seniors with Finding Nemo, Juniors with Monsters, Inc., Sophomores with Up, and Freshmen with Toy Story. The Sophomore Class took home first place for their creative Up float, complete with colorful balloons and a heartwarming message about adventure and friendship.

The excitement continued as the Woodhaven Warriors took the field and dominated the Dearborn Edsel Ford Thunderbirds, winning 63–7 in front of a packed home crowd.

During halftime, Amiris Storrs was crowned Homecoming Queen, and earlier in the day, Griffin Demyanovich was named Homecoming King during the school assembly.

Woodhaven High School Named One of Michigan’s Best Public High Schools

Woodhaven High School has been recognized as one of the top public high schools in Michigan, ranking 36th in the state according to the 2026 Best Public High Schools in America report released Monday by Niche.

Niche’s annual ranking evaluates more than 93,000 public high schools across the nation. Unlike other rankings that rely almost exclusively on test scores and academic performance, Niche incorporates input from students, alumni, and parents, alongside quantitative data from sources such as the U.S. Department of Education. The evaluation considers a wide range of factors, including teacher quality, available resources, and school facilities.

“We are proud to see Woodhaven High School recognized among the top schools in Michigan,” said Mark Greathead, Woodhaven-Brownstown School District Superintendent. “This ranking reflects the dedication of our staff, the hard work of our students, and the strong support of our families and community.”

This marks the 11th year that Niche has published its comprehensive school rankings, which provide a broad perspective on school quality and student experience. Woodhaven High School continues to build on its tradition of academic excellence, extracurricular opportunities, and a supportive learning environment.

Bates Elementary Student Honored at Board of Education Meeting

Evelyn Nichols, a 4th grader at Bates Elementary, was recognized at last night's WBSD Board of Education meeting for going above and beyond while riding the bus with a substitute driver. As the designated Safety, Evelyn took full charge of the seating process - guiding each student row by row to ensure everyone was properly seated.

Her leadership, maturity, and calm direction made the ride smoother and safer for everyone on board.

Now that’s a student who truly knows the Warrior Way—showing responsibility, respect, and pride wherever she goes!

New Balance Bikes and Tricycles Bring Joy and Learning to Gudith’s Young Fives

Thanks to a generous grant from the Woodhaven-Brownstown Education Foundation (WBEF), Young Fives students at Gudith Elementary are experiencing the joy of learning on two and three wheels!

Angela Stewart, Young Fives teacher at Gudith, used her WBEF grant to purchase two balance bikes and two tricycles for her classroom. The new additions have quickly become a favorite part of the students’ day - bringing smiles, laughter, and valuable hands-on learning opportunities.

“These new bikes and trikes are helping students develop balance, coordination, and confidence while engaging in meaningful, hands-on learning experiences,” Stewart said. “From working together to assemble the bikes to learning how to take care of them - like checking tire pressure and proper storage - our students are gaining real-world skills in responsibility, teamwork, and problem solving.”

Stewart shared that it’s been especially rewarding to see her students’ pride as they master new skills and encourage one another. The bikes have not only enhanced physical development but have also created moments of collaboration and connection among the class.

The Woodhaven-Brownstown Education Foundation continues to support innovative learning opportunities like this across the district, helping teachers bring creative, impactful ideas to life in their classrooms.

Teachers, Staff Collaborate During November PD

During the November professional development day, staff across the district engaged in learning tailored to their grade level and specialty areas. In the morning, teachers and interventionists focused on topics such as Number Talks and curriculum review, while PLC teams collaborated on instructional goals.

In the afternoon, sessions continued with literacy discussions, number sense foundations, and artificial intelligence learning for secondary staff. Meanwhile, several groups - including special teachers, social studies teams, paraprofessionals, music staff, counselors, and student support personnel - participated in full-day trainings, from trauma-informed practices to EdCamp collaboration and curriculum development.

The day provided meaningful learning and collaboration to support student success across the district.

Additionally, Woodhaven High School hosted Wayne County EdCamp for paraprofessionals across the county in the auditorium and throughout the school with different opportunities for learning from experts in their field.
