ATHLETIC DIRECTOR'S CORNER

Welcome to the June 2025 Athletic Newsletter. It's our 1-year Anniversary of keeping you connected about High School Athletics and the opportunities available to our students.

It's hard to believe that the season is - almost - over, and soon it's time to look forward to summer conditioning opportunities for our students.

As a reminder, for the safety of all our students and staff:

- All students who are below 9th grade must have a parent accompanying them to athletic events. They can not be dropped off alone or unsupervised. Parents will be called to come pick them back up or accompany them to the event.

Saturday, May 31 was a dramatic and exciting day of baseball and softball at Woodhaven High School as they hosted the district regional games. Both baseball and softball will advance this week as they rally to the state tournaments.

WHS Varsity Baseball ended the day with a big "W" after coming from behind to take a 7-6 win over Southgate Anderson in extra innings. This win secured the seventh district championship for the Varsity Baseball team led by Coach Corey Farner. The team continues their journey as they host Monroe in a Division 1 Regional Semifinal round game on Wednesday, June 4 at 4 p.m. Should they defeat Monroe, the team will play in the State Quarterfinal game on Saturday, June 7, hosted at Woodhaven High School.

WHS Varsity Softball captured their Division 1 District Championship 10-6 over Gibraltar Carlson on Saturday as well, which is their fourth in a row under Coach Ken Kroll. The season continues for the team as they play in the D1 Regional game at Allen Park High School on Saturday, June 7.

Boys & Girls Track finishes season as League Champs

Senior Maya Justice claimed the individual state title in girls’ long jump with a personal record of 19-5.25″. The distance, which was four inches shy of the state record, was also seven inches clear of the runner-up finisher.

The first-place finish in long jump was one of two all-state events for Justice. The Kent State University soccer and track signee went on to place sixth out of two dozen runners in the 400m (56.56).

After placing seventh in long jump at the state finals a year ago, senior Nick Henson doubled down on all-state honors by finishing runner-up in the same event (22′-8.75″), clearing his 2024 state finals mark by more than a foot (21′-5.5″).

Senior Deon Robertson also picked a top-4 placing in high jump, clearing the bar at 6′-6″.

Congratulations to all of our students who participated in the 2024-25 Track & Field season!

WBSD APP, "ROOMS" IS THE NEW ATHLETICS COMMUNICATION TOOL FOR COACHES, PLAYERS, FAMILIES

rooms tips for families

rooms students

Communicating with coaches just got easier as the WBSD is moving toward one communication platform for our coaching staff.

"Rooms," is built into the WBSD app, so parents only have to go to one place to communicate with coaches instead of multiple apps.

Rooms offers a Stream, where coaches can post announcements and content for all to see. In Messages, coaches can message parents individually if needed. Lastly, messages and announcements will automatically be translated according to the language setting on your device. That means if your phone is set to Spanish, Messages and Announcements within Rooms will automatically be translated to Spanish—without you having to change a single setting on the app.

If parents did not accept the invitation for Rooms which was pushed in December, they can go to edurooms.com and sign in with their cell phone number to be automatically connected to their students’ Rooms. NOTE: this must be the same cell phone number associated with their student(s) in Mistar. One of the benefits to Rooms is you only have to sign up once.

Have more questions about Rooms? See the WBSD homepage at https://www.mywbsd.org/o/wbsd/page/rooms-support for more support.

SPORTSMANSHIP REMINDER

REMINDERS FOR ALL FAMILIES ABOUT SPORTSMANSHIP -

Parents and fans should practice sportsmanship as well as our student athletes.

Parents need to remember the purpose of educational athletics:  to train young people for life, but also to allow student athletes and fans to have an enjoyable experience.

Parents can be the biggest role model for student athletes when it comes to their understanding of sportsmanship; therefore, parents should exhibit the qualities of self-control, fairness, courtesy and grace in winning and defeat at home or away games and events.

Respect the Game – Show respect for coaches, referees, opponents, and teammates. Everyone is here to learn and grow!

Win with Class, Lose with Grace – Whether you win or lose, always shake hands and show good sportsmanship.

Encourage, Don’t Criticize – Cheer for great plays, support teammates, and keep negative comments to yourself.

Officials Are Human Too – Respect referees' decisions, even if you don’t agree. The game can’t happen without them!

Represent WBSD with Pride – On and off the field, demonstrate a growth mindset, unity, value, and resiliency—the true spirit of a Warrior!

WARRIOR ATHLETICS FOUR POINT PLAN

The Student Athlete Experience:

  • Feedback Mechanisms: Create regular opportunities for student-athletes to provide anonymous feedback on their experience.

  • Recognition and Rewards: Celebrate achievements both on and off the field, including academic success and community service.

  • Inclusive Policies and Practices: Ensure that all practices and policies promote inclusivity, respect, and engagement for all students.

Coach Development:

  • Continuous Education: Encourage coaches to attend clinics, workshops, and conferences to stay updated on the latest coaching techniques and trends.

  • Performance Reviews: Implement regular performance evaluations with constructive feedback to help coaches grow.

Spectator Conduct/Sportsmanship:

  • Clear Expectations: Communicate a code of conduct for spectators at the start of each season, outlining what is and isn't acceptable behavior.

  • Positive Campaigns: Run campaigns promoting positive cheering and support for all participants, including opponents and officials.

Community Engagement:

  • Social Media Engagement: Use social media platforms to keep the community informed about events, achievements, and ways to get involved.

  • Community Partnerships: Partner with local businesses or organizations to sponsor events, provide resources, or support community initiatives.
